In the Garden is a featured work in Laguna Art Museum's current exhibition Collecting California, which will be on view until January 17, 2010. Come see the work in person!
Mabel Alvarez was a modernist painter who was influenced by her study of Impressionism, Theosophy, and color theory. Her art may also be viewed as feminist and symbolist.
In the Garden depicts a modern woman: a 1920s flapper. The woman, whose face bears no emotion, is disconnected from the viewer and her surroundings, which burst with color, rhythm, and life.
